Hydration Guide

We hear it often, but hydration is a must to lose weight and maintain a healthy, functioning body. Check out our advice to stay hydrated.

How Much Water Should You Drink?

Make sure to drink between 1.5 and 2 liters (about 6-8 cups of water daily). If you exercise, use a steam/sauna or if the weather is very warm, increase your intake by up to 1 liter a day.

Why Do You Need To Drink Water?

Water allows your liver to metabolize or burn fat (lipolysis) and helps eliminate toxins in the body. Without enough hydration, losing weight will be much harder. However, with fewer toxins in your system, your organs and metabolism can work more efficiently, and you will feel more energized and healthier.

Thirst can also be mistaken for hunger. This means that being dehydrated can lead you to eat more. Water is a natural appetite suppressant. Do not wait to feel thirsty and sip water all day long.

Dehydration can lead to constipation and irregular bowel movements. If you are constipated, you might not be drinking enough water. Constipation can lead to higher amounts of toxins in the system, which in turn will make the liver busier with detoxification (priority) instead of fat burning (less of a priority).

Drinking enough water decreases water retention and “water weight.”

Health Fact

One of the liver’s many functions is lipolysis or fat breakdown. When the liver functions well, it performs this function.

If we are dehydrated, our kidneys do not operate optimally, and the liver can take over some of the kidney functions.

As a result, it might prioritize other vital functions over lipolysis.

In a nutshell, you need to drink enough for the liver to burn fat and your kidneys to function optimally.

What Counts As Water?

Filtered water, bottled water (preferably in glass bottles). Plastic bottles can leak BPA in the water, an estrogen-mimicking substance. This can lead to hormonal imbalances (estrogen dominance) in men and women. Unsweetened herbal teas also count; caffeinated teas can dehydrate you.

Is Sparkling Water OK?

Sparkling water is not recommended daily because it can contain hidden salt. It is also a fizzy drink, which is more challenging for the digestive system. However, it is fine occasionally.

Can You Drink Too Much Water?

YES. Moderation is key—anything in excess, even if it’s a good thing, can be harmful. Drinking too much water can create a relatively rare condition called hyponatremia (water intoxication). This happens with huge intakes of water (15 liters a day), but you can also experience symptoms of it if you drink more than 1 liter of water per hour. Sip your water throughout the day to avoid this. Excessive water consumption can lead to low sodium and mineral levels in the blood, which can make you feel dizzy and make your blood pressure drop.

Are Diet Sodas OK?

Absolutely not! Please avoid all sodas, even when naturally sweetened with stevia. Artificial sweeteners are toxic and linked to cancer and weight gain. The body perceives them as sugar, and they spike blood sugar levels. The homemade lemonade is the only sweet drink allowed if you have cravings for lemonade. Make sure to use 100% pure stevia, though! Often, products labeled as stevia contain other sweeteners and sugar derivatives.

Skip the ice!

It’s best to consume water at room temperature. According to Chinese medicine, water with ice creates “heat” and inflammation in the system and can best be avoided. Note that this advice is specifically for the combination of water and ice (adding ice to a protein shake is perfectly fine!).
